Brazil Posts Widest Budget Deficit in Nearly 3 Years
Brazil recorded a nominal budget deficit of BRL 119.2 billion in May of 2023, up from BRL 66 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year and market forecasts of BRL 59.7 billion. It was the largest budget deficit since August 2020, as the central government gap ballooned to BRL 102.9 billion from BRL 67.4 billion in May 2022. At the same time, state-owned companies' shortfall rose slightly to BRL 0.7 billion from BRL 0.6 billion; and the regional governments' balance switched to a deficit of BRL 15.6 billion from a surplus of BRL 2 billion a year ago.

Brazil April Government Budget Gap Smaller than Expected
Brazil recorded a nominal budget deficit of BRL 25.4 billion in April of 2023, smaller than BRL 41 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year and market forecasts of BRL 42.2 billion. The central government gap shrank to BRL 21.3 billion from BRL 43.5 billion in April 2022, and the state-owned companies' shortfall narrowed to BRL 1.1 billion from BRL 1.5 billion. Meanwhile, the regional governments' balance shifted to a deficit of BRL 3 billion compared to a surplus of BRL 4 billion a year ago.

Brazil March Government Budget Gap More than Triples
Brazil recorded a nominal budget deficit of BRL 79.5 billion in March of 2023, wider than BRL 22.5 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. The central government deficit jumped to BRL 66.5 billion from BRL 32.7 billion in March 2022, and the regional governments' balance shifted to a shortfall of BRL 12.7 billion compared to a surplus of BRL 6.3 billion a year ago. In the meantime, the state-owned companies' gap rose to BRL 0.30 billion from BRL 0.12 billion.
