Brazil July Car Output Falls More than Expected
Brazil's total production of cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses fell by 3.3% over a month earlier to 183 thousand units in July 2023, the lowest level for that month since 2021. Analysts had expected a 0.2% decrease. July's outcome mainly reflected the recent stoppages in the assembly lines, following the boost from government-sponsored discounts on car sales, which helped to reduce the high inventories of factories and dealerships. On a yearly basis, auto production declined by 16.4%. In the year-to-date, the production of 1.315 million units is almost the same as the first seven months of 2022, with a slight increase of 0.3%.

Brazil Car Output Surges 27.4% MoM in May
The total production of cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses in Brazil increased by 27.4% over a month earlier to 227.9 thousand units in May 2023, the highest level for that month since 2020. Year-to-date, auto production grew by 6.2%, with 942,800 vehicles assembled from January to May. Yearly, auto production grew by 10.7%. “It is a relevant increase and is explained by the return of factories. So, practically, we had no stoppages in the month of May”, said Márcio de Lima Leite, President of ANFAVEA. He added that the month had four more days compared to the previous one and the automakers created expectations regarding the announcement of a temporary program by the federal government, which reduces the prices of cars by up to R$ 8,000. The temporary program focuses on reducing the price of cars and encouraging the renewal of the collective and freight transport fleet with more than 20 years of use, through direct discounts to the consumer.
