Brazil Industrial Output Unexpectedly Rises in June
Industrial production in Brazil went up by 0.1% from the previous month in June 2023, better than market forecasts of a 0.1% fall and following a 0.3% rise in the prior month. Output increased in 7 of the 25 industrial branches, with the most significant positive influence coming from extractive industries (+2.9%). Other positive contributions came from the manufacturing of clothing and accessories (+4.9%), rubber and plastic products (+1.2%), and metal products (+1.2%). On the other hand, production declined sharply for coke, petroleum derivatives, and biofuels (-3.6%); motor vehicles, trailers, and bodies (-4%), and machinery and equipment (-4.5%). On a yearly basis, industrial production increased by 0.3% in June, in line with market expectations, slowing from a 1.9% rise in the prior month, which was the strongest since June 2021. Year-to-date, Brazilian industrial activity shrank by 0.3% over a year ago.

Brazilian Industrial Production Rebounds
Industrial production in Brazil edged 0.3% higher from the previous month in May of 2023, meeting market expectations and trimming the 0.6% decline in the previous month, underscoring Brazil’s strong economic momentum despite the prolonged period of elevated borrowing costs. Output expanded for 19 of the 25 industrial branches, led by growth in the production of petroleum derivates and biofuels (7.7%), auto vehicles (7.4%), and machinery and equipment (12.3%). On the other hand, lower output was noted for food (-2.6%) and chemical and pharmaceutical products (-9.7%). On a yearly basis, industrial production rose by 1.9%, rebounding from the 2.7% decline in April.

Brazil Industrial Output Falls More than Expected
Industrial production in Brazil shrank by 0.6% from the previous month in April 2023, compared with market forecasts of a 0.2% decrease and following a 1.1% rise in the prior month. Output declined in 16 of the 25 industrial branches, with the most significant negative influences coming from food products (-3.2%), machinery and equipment (-9.9%) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-4.6%). Production also fell for computer equipment, electronic and optical products (-9.4%); extractive industries (-1.1%); beverages (-3.6%); metal products (-3.3%); other transport equipment (-5.2%) and electric machines, appliances and material (-2.9%). On a yearly basis, industrial production slumped by 2.7% in April, the most since January 2022, compared with market expectations of a 1.1% drop. Year-to-date, Brazilian industrial activity contracted by 1% over a year ago.
