The latest result marked the fourth time of drop in new construction starts since the start of the year, amid declines in dwellings of owned (-12.4% vs -11.5% in May), rented (-0.6% vs 10.5%), built for sale (-2.9% vs 9.1%), pre-fabricated (-12.3% vs 3.9%), and two-vy-four (-6.8% vs 1.8%). At the same time, fresh constructions eased sharply for issued (13.6% vs 78.8%).

Japan's housing starts unexpectedly grew by 3.5 percent year-on-year in May 2023, easily topping market forecasts of a 2.2 percent drop while swinging from a 11.9 percent slump a month earlier. This was the first rise since January, as new constructions bounced back for all sectors, namely rented (10.5% vs -2.8% in April), issued (78.8% vs -48.9%), built for sale (9.1% vs -21.8%), pre-fabricated (3.9% vs -3.8%), and two-by four (1.8% vs -13.7%). Meantime, fresh dwellings continued to fall for owned (-11.5% vs -11.6%). .
