In Japan, the Leading Composite Index consists of 12 indexes such as account inventory ratios, machinery orders, stock prices and other leading economic indicators. The index anticipates changes in the direction of the Japanese economy in the coming months. In general, increase in the index reflects that the economy is in an expansion phase, and decreasing coincident index reflects that the economy is in a contraction phase. The index of leading economic indicators in Japan, which is used to gauge the economic outlook for a few months ahead on data such as job offers and consumer sentiment, was revised lower to 109.2 in May 2023 from 109.5 in the preliminary estimate, and compared to a 108.1 in the previous month. This was the highest level since last November under a new base year of 2020, which replaced an old one of 2015. Expectations built that a recovery momentum in the Japanese economy would continue following stronger-than-expected growth during Q1 of the year.
