Japan Inflation Rate Unexpectedly Falls
The annual inflation rate in Japan unexpectedly declined to 3.2% in May 2023 from April's 3-month high of 3.5%, missing market forecasts of 4.1%. Cost of furniture & household utensils slowed (9.6% vs 10.0% in April); while prices of fuel, light, and water charges decreased for the fourth month in a row (-8.3% vs -3.8%), mainly due to electricity (-17.1% vs -9.3%). In contrast, inflation was unchanged for both housing (at 1.2%) and education (at 1.3%). At the same time, prices quickened for transport (2.2% vs 1.8%), clothes (3.9% vs 3.8%), medical care (2.1% vs 1.7%), and miscellaneous (1.3% vs 1.2%). Also, food prices rose the most since September 1976 (8.6% vs 8.4% in April). Core inflation also dropped to 3.2% in May from a 3-month peak of 3.4% in April, compared with forecasts of 3.1%, staying outside the Bank of Japan's 2% target for the 14th month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices were flat in May, after a 0.6% rise in April which was the steepest pace since April 2014.
