Japan Current Account Surplus Below Forecasts
Japan's current account surplus jumped to JPY 1,862.4 billion in May 2023 from JPY 773..4 billion in the same month a year earlier. This was the fourth straight month of surplus in the current account, compared with market estimates of a gain of JPY 1,884.5 billion, as the surplus of primary income increased to JPY 3,631.9 billion from JPY 3,105.2 billion in the prior year. At the same time, the deficit of goods account decreased sharply to JPY 1,186.74 billion from JPY 1,938.1 billion, with exports falling by 2.8 percent year-on-year while imports falling at a steeper 10.2 percent. Meanwhile, the gap in services account widened to JPY 240.9 billion from JPY 181.9 billion a year ago. The shortfall of secondary income increased to JPY 341.8. billion from JPY 211.8 billion.

Japan Current Account Surplus Surges in April
Japan's current account surplus jumped to JPY 1,895.1 billion in April 2023 from JPY 1,075.1 billion in the same month a year earlier. This was the third straight month of surplus in the current account, topping market estimates of a gain of JPY 1,663.8 billion, as the surplus of primary income increased to JPY 3,066.3 billion from JPY 2,974.2 billion in the prior year. At the same time, the deficit of goods account plunged to JPY 113.1.4 billion from JPY 684.1 billion, with exports growing by 2.6 percent year-on-year while imports falling 4.1 percent. Further, the gap in services account narrowed to JPY 646.5 billion from JPY 1,002.8 billion a year ago. Meantime, the shortfall of secondary income increased to JPY 411.1 billion from JPY 212.2 billion.
