Household spending in Japan declined in real terms by 4.2% yoy in June 2023, compared with market consensus of a 4.1% fall and after a 4.0% drop in the prior month. This was the fifth time of decrease in personal spending so far this year, amid intense cost pressures. Expenditures fell for most components, namely food (-3.9% vs -2.7% in May), housing (-2.9% vs -4.2%), furniture & household utensils (-17.6% vs -8.9%), clothing & footwear (-4.3% vs -4.8%), medical care (-8.5% vs -2.4%), culture & recreation (-2.5% vs 3.7%), and education (-9.6% vs 9.9%). At the same time, spending on fuel, light & water charges slowed sharply (0.6% vs 4.3%).
