Job advertisements in Australia increased by 0.4 percent month-over-month in July 2023, beating market consensus of a 0.1 percent rise while shifting from a revised 2.7 percent fall a month earlier. On an annual basis, job ads fell 8.9 percent but remained 49.8 percent above pre-pandemic levels. "The series has fallen 2.1% over the past three months, suggesting the July lift is likely to be a blip," said ANZ economist Madeline Dunk. “There are other signs labor market momentum is starting to slow as the RBA’s 400bp of hikes flow through to economic activity."

Job advertisements in Australia decreased by 2.5 percent month-over-month in June 2023, compared to a downwardly revised flat reading a month earlier. On an annual basis, job ads fell 10 percent but remained 47.5 percent above pre-pandemic levels. "It will take time for the labor market tightness to ease," said ANZ economist Madeline Dunk. "But the direction of change is clear, and we expect an ongoing and orderly moderation in job ads."

Australia Job Ads Up for 1st Time in 4 Months
Job advertisements in Australia edged up 0.1 percent month-over-month in May 2021, after a revised 0.7% fall in the prior month. This was the first rise in four months, suggesting the overall demand for labor remained resilient in a still red-hot market. On an annual basis, ads fell 6.1% but remained 52% above pre-pandemic levels. "Strong migration and solid demand should limit the pace of declines in ANZ-Indeed Job Ads, and subsequently the rise in the unemployment rate," said ANZ economist Madeline Dunk.
