Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of commodities. Metalliferous ores and metal scrap account for 29 percent of total exports; coal, coke and briquettes for 15 percent; and gas for 7 percent. The country also exports: food and live animals (14 percent), mainly meat (5 percent) and cereals (4 percent); manufactured goods (6 percent), mainly non-ferrous metals (4 percent); and machinery and transport equipment (6 percent). Australia's largest export markets are China (32 percent of total exports), Japan (16 percent), South Korea (7 percent), the US (5 percent), India (4 percent), New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan (3 percent each).

Australia Exports Rise 4.4% MoM in May
Exports of goods and services from Australia grew 4.4% mom to AUD 57.77 billion in May 2023, as all sectors increased, with total exports to China, the country's largest trading partner, surging 9% from a month earlier, rebounding sharply from an upwardly revised 15.9% plunge in April. Sales of non-rural goods rose by 1.9% to AUD 39.81 billion, mainly boosted by increases in coal, coke & briquettes (1.6%), other mineral fuels (3.4%), metals (15.8%), other manufactures (21.7%). Meanwhile, sales of rural goods climbed by 5.0% to AUD 6.19 billion due to other rural goods (16.1%). Also, non-monetary gold surged by 77.1% to AUD 2.89 billion. At the same time, service sales advanced by 1.4% to AUD 8.86 billion, boosted by a rise in travel (2.3%) and other services (0.2%).

Australia Exports Fall to 9-Month Low
Exports of goods and services from Australia shrank 5% mom to a nine-month low of AUD 56.18 billion in April 2023 amid weakening global demand, with total exports to China, the country's largest trade partner plunging by 15.4%. Sales of non-rural goods dropped by 6.1% to AUD 39.70 billion, mainly dragged down by declines in metal ores & minerals (-10.4%), coal, coke & briquettes (-7.1%), metals (-17.9.0%), and other non-rural (-3.7%). Also, sales of rural goods fell by 9.3% to AUD 6.11 billion due to cereal grains & cereal preparations (-6.5%) and other rural goods (-20%). Meanwhile, non-monetary gold decreased by 19.7% to AUD 1.63 billion. By contrast, services sales grew by 7.8% to AUD 8.72 billion, boosted by a rise in travel (13.8%).
