Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada rose to 2.9% year-on-year to $1,194 in April 2023, after a 1.4% advance in the prior month. It was the highest increase in earnings since November last year, with 18 of the 20 sectors reporting gains. The largest gains were seen in management of companies & enterprises (+14% to $1,678), utilities (+10.3% to $2,131), forestry & logging (+10% to $1,432) and construction (+7.3% to $1,514). Across Canadian provinces, earnings surged the most in Nunavut (+10.9% to $1,667), Northwest Territories (+5.4% to $1,611), Manitoba (+5.4% to $1,096) and Prince Edward Island (+4.3% to $1,003).

Canada Weekly Earnings Growth Continues to Ease
Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada rose 1.4% year-on-year to $1,185 in March 2023, after an upwardly revised 1.9% advance in the prior month. It was the slowest increase in average weekly earnings since June 2021, with 14 of the 20 sectors reporting gains. The largest gains were seen in management of companies & enterprises (+11.2% to $1,669), mining, quarrying, and oil & gas extraction (+8.7% to $2,355) and information & cultural industries (+8.5% to $1,728). Nunavut (+12.4% to $1,709) recorded the largest proportional gain in average weekly earnings in March, followed by Manitoba (+5.2% to $1,091) and Saskatchewan (+4% to $ 1,176).
