Canada Exports Fall Over 3% MoM in May
Exports from Canada dropped 3.8% over a month to $61.5 billion in May 2023, reversing the previous rise, with 7 of the 11 product sections posting decreases. Exports of energy products plunged 7.3% as lower cost led to falling crude oil sales (-8.3%). Coal exports also declined due to smaller shipments to Asian countries. Meanwhile, exports of farm, fishing & intermediate food products sank for the third month by 13.4% amid improved global supplies, especially for wheat and canola. Among major trading partners, sales fell to Italy (-45.1%), Switzerland (-44.2%), United Kingdom (-20.1%), South Korea (-18.2%), and the US (-2.9%). On the other hand, they grew most to Germany (+32.5%), Mexico (20.9%), and China (11.9%).

Canada Exports Halt 2-Month Decline
Exports from Canada rose 2.5% over a month to $64.9 billion in April 2023, following two consecutive monthly declines, with 6 of the 11 product sections showing increases. Exports of metal and non-metallic mineral products (+13.6%) contributed the most, of which unwrought gold (+46.0%), largely reflecting higher transfers of gold assets from Canadian financial institutions to the United States. Exports also grew for energy products (+6.4%), as higher prices led to a rebound in crude oil sales (+7.1%), following six months of declines. Additionally, coal exports experienced growth due to increased shipments to South Korea. At the same time, exports of motor vehicles and parts surged (+7.4%). Among major trading partners, overseas sales increased primarily to South Korea (+35.2%) Italy (+15.2%) and the US (+4.4%), but decreased to the UK (-34.4%), Germany (-24.8%) and China (-14.7%).
