Canada Building Permits Unexpectedly Rise in June
The total value of building permits in Canada rose by 6.1% from a month earlier to $11.6 billion in June 2023, after an upwardly revised 12.6% growth in the previous month and against market forecasts of a 3.5% decline. The total monthly value of the non-residential segment surged by 20.4% to reach $4.7 billion, driven by increases in the industrial (+51.0%) and institutional (+67.2%) components, which more than offset losses in the commercial one (-7.7%). Meanwhile, residential permits slumped by 1.8% to $6.9 billion, mainly due to decreases in Ontario (-11.4% or -$358.1 million) following a period of strong multi-unit project volumes in May. On a quarterly basis, the total value of building permits fell by 1% to $32.2 billion in Q2.

Canada Building Permits Rebound in May
The total monthly value of building permits in Canada increased by 10.5 percent to CAD 10.5 billion in May 2023, partially reversing a revised 21 percent decline in the previous month. The value of residential permits rose by 8.5 percent to CAD 6.8 billion, with authorizations in Ontario experiencing a 16.3 percent climb, primarily driven by multi-dwelling permits issued in urban areas. Furthermore, the value of non-residential permits increased by 14.2 percent to CAD 3.7 billion, as a 45.8 percent surge in commercial permits more than offset a 23.3 percent decrease in the institutional component. Comparing year-on-year figures, the value of building permits declined by 13.5 percent in May.

Canada Building Permits Fall the Most Since December 2020
The total value of building permits in Canada shrank by 18.8% from a month earlier to $9.6 billion in April 2023, after an upwardly revised 12.3% growth in the previous month and well below market estimates of a 5% fall. This was the lowest level since December 2020, as the non-residential segment slumped by 34.6% to a $3.4 billion, following a record high of $5.2 billion in March, with declines in all components: industrial (-49.6%), commercial (-40.2%) and institutional (-1.6%). Also, construction intentions in the residential sector went down (-6.1% to $6.1 billion), due mainly to decreases in Ontario (-10.5% or -$296.4 million).
