Canada Imports Edge Up 3% MoM in May
Imports to Canada rose by 3% over a month to $64.97 billion in May 2023, following three consecutive monthly declines, with increases observed in 8 of the 11 product sections. Imports of metal & non-metallic mineral products (+12.3%) surged the most in May, attributed to higher imports of unwrought gold, silver, platinum group metals and their alloys (+42.8%). Imports of motor vehicles and parts also soared 4.5% to reach a record-high of $11.3 billion, primarily driven by higher imports of engines & parts (+6.9%) and passenger cars & light trucks (+4.6%). Among major trading partners, purchases went up mostly from the UK (82.7%) and Japan (8.2%) but slumped from the Netherlands (-13.6%) and Switzerland (-12.4%).

Canada Imports Down for 3rd Month
Imports to Canada fell 0.2% over a month to $62.9 billion in April 2023, the third consecutive monthly decrease, with declines observed in 7 of the 11 product sections. Imports of energy products (-12.8%) decreased the most in April, amid a slump in crude oil imports (-20.5%), in part due to lower shipments from Saudi Arabia and the United States. Imports of refined petroleum products also fell sharply (-11.7%), mainly attributable to lower imports of motor gasoline from the United States. Meanwhile, purchases of consumer goods rose 4.0% in April, on higher imports of pharmaceutical products (+28.1%). Among major trading partners, purchases fell mostly from Switzerland (-17.1%), Italy (-10.1%), the UK (-9.2%), China (-8.9%) and the US (-0.4%), but jumped from the Netherlands (+55.6%).
