Italy’s jobless rate fell to 7.6% in May of 2023, below market expectations of 7.9% at the lowest since the Covid pandemic triggered a labor force crisis in April 2020, retreating from the 7.8% in the previous month. The figure was aligned with a continuously tight labor force in the Eurozone, adding leeway for the European Central Bank to extend its tightening momentum in its upcoming meetings. The number of unemployed individuals fell by 34 thousand to 1.935 million in the period, the sharpest decline since February 2022. In the meantime, that of employed individuals increased by 21 thousand to 23.471 million. Still, the labor force participation was unchanged at 66.3% for the third consecutive month. On the other hand, the youth unemployment rate rose by 1 percentage point to 21.7%.

Italy's jobless rate eased to 7.8% in April 2023, the lowest in three years, from an upwardly revised 7.9% in March and in line with market expectations. The number of unemployed people decreased by 14 thousand people to 1,986 million, while the number of employed individuals rose by 48 thousand to 23.446 million. The labor force participation rate went up to 66.4% from 66.3% and the employment rate, one of the lowest in the Eurozone, was stable at 61.0%. Meanwhile, the youth unemployment rate, measuring job-seekers between 15 and 24 years old, fell to 20.4% from 21.8% the month before, its lowest level since 2008. In April 2022, the jobless rate was higher at 8.2%. The number of employed was up by 390,000 from last year due to an increase in permanent employees and the number of self-employed, which offset a decrease in temporary employees.
