In Italy, the Confidence Climate Index covers 2,000 Italian consumers. The survey is done by phone and assesses households’ economic conditions, employment and saving prospects and expected purchases of durable goods. The consumer confidence index is adjusted for seasonal effects and fixed to a base year of 2005. The value 100 indicates no evolution in consumer sentiment, a value over 100 shows increasing confidence and a value under 100 indicates low expectations.

The economic climate fell from 127.6 to 123.4, the future one worsened from 118.4 to 115.0, the personal one slipped from 102.2 to 101.1 and, finally, the current one shrank 102.0 to 101.0.

Italy Consumer Confidence Rises to 16-Month High
Consumer confidence in Italy jumped to 108.6 in June of 2023 from 105.1 in the previous month, surpassing market expectations of 105.5 to notch the highest reading since February 2022 despite ongoing concerns that the European Central Bank will hike its borrowing costs through a slowing economy. Sentiment improved considerably for the current macroeconomic climate (127.6 vs 119.8 in May) and future expectations (118.4 vs 112.6). In the meantime, confidence improved to a smaller extent for the current climate (102 vs 100), and respondents’ personal financial situation 102.2 vs 100.1).
