Italian Retail Sales Grow the Most in 4 Months
Retail sales in Italy rose by 0.7% from the previous month in May of 2023, the most since January, and stretching from the 0.2% expansion in April to show some resilience to higher borrowing costs from the ECB. Retail activity rose by 0.2% in terms of volume, reflecting strong demand from Italian consumers despite the sharp inflationary pressure in the period. Retail was mainly supported by a 1.1% increase in sales of non-food goods, compared to the slower 0.2% uptick for sales of food goods. On a yearly basis, retail activity was 3% higher in May, easing from the 3.2% increase in the previous month.

Italian Retail Sales Rise Less than Expected
Retail sales in Italy edged 0.2% higher from the previous month in April of 2023, picking up from a stall in the previous month and missing forecasts of a 0.3% rise as sharp inflation in the Italian economy outweighed a 0.2% retreat in the volume of retail trade. Retail was supported primarily through a 0.9% advance in sales of food items, extending the 0.1% increase in the previous month. On the other hand, sales of non-food items fell by 0.4% following the 0.1% drop in March. On a yearly basis, retail sales in Italy rose by 3.2%, the least since October 2022.
