The manufacturing confidence index in Italy fell to 99.3 in July 2023 from a downwardly revised 100.2 in the previous month and missing market expectations of 99.8. It was the lowest reading since January 2021, with both assessments of current production (-12.1 vs -11) and order books (-16.1 vs -13) worsening, while a slight increase was reported in the level of inventories (4.9 vs 4.8). Pessimism also grew regarding the future economic outlook (-13.9 vs -11).On the other hand, the composite business morale index, combining surveys of the manufacturing, retail, construction and services sectors, rose to 109.1 from the six-month low of 108.2 thanks to improved sentiment among services, retailers and building firms.

Both expectations on production (3.6 vs 4.1 in May) and assessments on order books (-12.8 vs -10.8) showed a worsening, while a slight increase was reported in the level of inventories (4.8 vs 4.6). The composite business morale index, combining surveys of the manufacturing, retail, construction and services sectors, dropped to a six-month low of 108.3 from 108.6.
