In Spain, the Industrial Confidence Indicator (ICI) measures the level of optimism of entrepreneurs for the future development of industrial activity. The ICI is conducted based on the sample of 2500 enterprises representing different sizes, regions and sectors of Spanish economy. The response rate is around 60 percent. ICI is measured on a scale of -100 (extreme lack of confidence) to +100 (extreme confidence).

The industry confidence indicator in Spain plunged to -9.5 in July of 2023 from the downwardly revised -8.5 in the previous month, pointing to the greatest amount of pessimism since August 2020 as political uncertainty, a rebound in inflation, and tight borrowing costs weighed on the Spanish economy. Pessimism increased regarding businesses’ order book levels (-13.3 vs -10 in June) and production expectations (-2.6 vs -1.8), while optimism regarding stock levels fell (12.5 vs 13.6).

Spain Industrial Confidence Plunges to 2-1/2-Year Low
The industry confidence indicator in Spain sank to -8.3 in June of 2023 from the upwardly revised -5.4 in the previous month, the twelfth consecutive period of pessimism and the worst since October 2020. The result aligned with the downturn in business sentiment throughout the European continent as inflation dampened consumer appetite and interest rates are expected to keep rising. Deterioration was noted in order book levels (-9.7 vs -6.3 in May) and production expectations (-1.6 vs 13.6), while stock levels edged higher (13.6 vs 12.4).
