Russia Real Wages Grow More Than Expected
Real wages in Russia rose by 13.3% year-on-year in May 2023, above market expectations of a 10.3% growth. It was the eighth consecutive month of real wage increases and the biggest since July 2008. Harsh Western sanctions imposed in response to Moscow's actions in Ukraine resulted in a 6.1% decline in real wages during May 2022. Meanwhile, average nominal wages advanced 16.1% from a year earlier to 72,851 roubles, but increased 2.4% in month-over-month terms. The annual inflation rate in Russia was at 2.5% in May 2023.

Real wages in Russia rose by 10.4% year-on-year in April 2023, above market expectations of a 10.2% growth. It was the seventh consecutive month of real wage increases and the biggest since February 2018. Extensive Western sanctions imposed in response to Moscow's actions in Ukraine resulted in a 7.2% decline in real wages during April 2022. Meanwhile, average nominal wages advanced 13% from a year earlier to 71,204 roubles. The annual inflation rate in Russia was at 2.3% in April 2023, the lowest since February 2020.

Real wages in Russia rose by 2.7% year-on-year in March 2023, below market expectations of a 3.6% growth. It was the sixth consecutive month of real wage increases and the biggest since March 2022. Meanwhile, average nominal wages advanced 6.3% from a year earlier to 71,334 roubles. The annual inflation rate in Russia was at 3.5% in March of 2023, the lowest since July 2020.
