India's fiscal deficit increased to INR 1.34 trillion in April 2023-24, compared to INR 0.75 trillion in the same month of the previous fiscal year. This widening deficit accounted for 7.5 percent of the government's estimate for the current financial year, contrasting with the 4.5 percent recorded during the corresponding period last year. Total expenditure increased by 10.6 percent to reach INR 3.04 trillion, while receipts declined by 14.7 percent to INR 1.71 trillion. Looking at the 2022-23 fiscal year, which concluded in March, the government reported a fiscal deficit of INR 17.3 trillion. This amount represented 98.7 percent of the revised annual estimate and was equivalent to 6.4 percent of the country's GDP.
