South Africa Producer Inflation Lowest in 18 Months
The annual producer price inflation in South Africa slowed to 8.6% in April 2023 from 10.6% in the previous month and less than market expectations of 9.5%. It marked the lowest reading since October 2021, due to the further slowdown in costs for most manufactured goods, particularly for coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber, and plastic products (6% vs 12.2% in March), transport equipment (13.8% vs 14.5%) and metals, machinery, equipment & computing equipment (6.9% vs 9.2%). On a monthly basis, producer prices stalled, following a 1% advance in March and compared to market estimates of a 0.5% rise.
