The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index fell further to 47.3 in July 2023, from 47.6 in the prior month. The latest reading pointed to the sixth consecutive month of contraction in South African manufacturing activity and the steepest since July 2021. The business activity sub-index saw a sharp decline of almost 11 points in July. "Besides the return of more intensive power cuts, delays in receiving inputs amid the transport disruptions on the N3 corridor through the month of July may explain the large drop," Absa said. Indeed, a substantial rise in the supplier deliveries index to the highest level so far this year was noted. On a more positive note, the PMI price sub-index moved down notably in July source: Bureau for Economic Research (BER)

South Africa Factory Activity Shrinks More than Expected
The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index fell once again to 47.6 in June 2023, from 49.2 in May and worse than market expectations of 48.9. It marks the fifth consecutive month of contraction in manufacturing activity and the steepest since July last year, as business conditions deteriorated further. "A key drag on the sector seems to come from weak demand, with the new sales orders index edging down once again as the decline in export sales deepened and domestic demand remains under pressure," Absa said. "However, the survey signaled that business conditions will improve by the end of the year," it added.

South Africa Factory Activity Shrinks for 4th Month
The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index fell to 49.2 points in May of 2023, from 49.8 in the prior month. The latest reading pointed to the fourth consecutive month of contraction in manufacturing activity, amid a sharp deterioration in the business outlook to its weakest since early 2020, amid the ongoing power crisis in South Africa. "This is the most pessimistic respondents have been about the near-term outlook since the strictest phase of South Africa's COVID-lockdown three years ago," Absa said. "The average index level of business activity in the first two months of the second quarter is below the first-quarter average. This suggests that the sector may once again detract from quarterly GDP growth after an expected expansion in the first quarter.", it added.
