Among them, food drinks and tobacco account for the highest share (39.3 percent); followed by electrical goods and furniture (12.0 percent share); computer equipment books and other (11.4 percent share); pharmaceutical and medical goods (9.9 percent share); textiles, clothing, footwear (9.2 percent share); auto fuel (9.1 percent share); other non-food products (6.0 percent share) and mail orders and internet (2.9 percent share). Eurozone Retail Sales Unchanged for 2nd Month
Retail sales in the Euro Area remained unchanged for the second consecutive month in May 2023, following declines in both February and March and missing market expectations of a 0.2 percent increase. This stagnation can be attributed to households facing squeezed income due to persistently high inflation and increasing borrowing costs. Sales of food, drinks and tobacco declined for a fourth consecutive month (-0.5 percent vs -0.3 percent in April) and those of automotive fuel were down for a second month in a row (-0.3 percent vs -2.4 percent). Meanwhile, spending on non-food items edged up 0.1 percent (vs 0.3 percent in April), despite a decline in on-line trade (-0.9 percent vs 1.8 percent). On a yearly basis, retail trade dropped 2.9 percent in May, an eighth consecutive month of contraction.

Eurozone Retail Sales Unexpectedly Flat
Retail sales in the Euro Area remained unchanged in April 2023, following a revised 0.4 percent decline in March and falling short of market expectations of a 0.2 percent growth. Non-food trade rose by 0.5 percent, helped by a notable 2.7 percent increase in online trade. However, declines were reported for both food, drinks, and tobacco sales (-0.5 percent) and fuel trade (-2.3 percent). Comparing the data on a yearly basis, retail sales dropped 2.6 percent, marking the seventh consecutive month of contraction.
