Payroll employment in the French private sector increased by 86.8 thousand or 0.4% to 21.14 million in the first quarter of 2023, more than the initial projection of 42 thousand, following a 51.5 thousand increase in the previous three-month period. It was the ninth successive quarterly gain in job creation, led by market services (+67.8 thousand), non-market services (+12.7 thousand), industry (+7.5 thousand), and agriculture (+0.3 thousand). By contrast, the jobs fell in construction (-1.5 thousand). Year-on-year, payrolls were up 343.0 thousand, or 1.6%.

Payroll employment in the French private sector rose by 42 thousand or 0.2% to 21.08 million in the first quarter of 2023, following a 44.4 thousand increase in the previous period and in line with market expectations, preliminary estimates showed. It marked the ninth consecutive quarter of growth in job creation, prompted by increases from market services (+36.1 thousand) and non-market services (+9.9 thousand). Year-on-year, payrolls went up 271.1 thousand or 1.3%.
