In France, industrial production measures the output of businesses integrated in industrial sector of the economy. Manufacturing is the most important sector and accounts for 86 percent of total production. The biggest segments within Manufacturing are: Food products and beverages (13 percent of total production); machinery and equipment goods (13 percent), of which computer, electronic and optical products (5 percent); basic metals and fabricated metal products (12 percent); other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (12 percent); transport equipment (10 percent); rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (8 percent); and chemicals and chemical products (6 percent). Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning account for 11 percent of total output, Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation account for 1 percent and Mining and quarrying account also for 1 percent.

French Industrial Output Drops More than Expected
Industrial production in France fell by 0.9% month-on-month in June of 2023, from a downwardly revised 1.1% gain in the previous month, and compared to market expectations of a 0.3% decline, driven by significant slumps in key sectors, especially in manufacturing (-1% vs 1.2%), particularly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum, which experienced a notable decline (-0.7% vs 44.7%). Construction also dropped at a faster rate (-2.6% vs 0.8%), and the production of mining & quarrying, energy, water supply & waste management decreased as well (-0.4% vs 0.3%). Year-on-year, industrial production plunged 0.3%, reversing a 2.2% growth in May.

French Industrial Output Unexpectedly Rises in May
Industrial production in France rose by 1.2% month-on-month in May of 2023, following a 0.8% growth in the previous month and compared to market expectations of a 0.2% drop. Output surged for manufacturing (1.4% vs 0.6%), namely manufacture of food products and beverages (1.6% vs -0.5%) and coke and refined petroleum (45.1% vs 22.1%) with the end of strikes in refineries. Construction also increased faster (0.9% vs 0.8%) while there was a slowdown in the production of mining & quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (0.2% vs 1.8%). Year-on-year, industrial production rose 2.6%, after a prior 1.3% gain.

French Industrial Output Rises More than Expected
Industrial production in France rose by 0.8% month-on-month in April of 2023, following a 1.1% decline in March, and compared to market expectations of a 0.3% growth. Output rebounded significantly in all sectors: manufacturing (0.7% vs -1.1%), mainly prompted by coking & refining (23.6% vs -45.6%) and electrical equipment (1.5% vs -6.2%); mining & quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (1.8% vs -1.2%) and construction (0.8% vs -0.9%). Year-on-year, industrial production inched up by 1.3%, after a 0.1% drop in the previous month.
