US Factory Orders Rise Less than Forecast
New orders for manufactured goods in the US increased by 0.3 percent compared to the previous month in May 2023, the same pace as in the previous period but falling short of market expectations for a 0.8 percent advance. Notably, demand for transportation remained the primary driver of growth, as orders rose by 3.8 percent, following a 4.8 percent increase in April, mainly boosted by civilian aircraft and ships & boats. Demand was also up for electrical equipment, appliances, and components (1.9 percent vs -2.8 percent), computers and electronic products (0.3 percent vs -1.8 percent), machinery (1.2 percent vs 0.4 percent), primary metals (0.4 percent vs -0.5 percent), and fabricated metal products (0.1 percent vs -0.2 percent). Finally, demand for nondurable goods declined by 1.2 percent, after a 0.7 percent fall in April.

US Factory Orders Grow Less Than Expected
New orders for manufactured goods in the US increased by 0.4% from the previous month in April of 2023 amid strong defense spending, but slowing from the downwardly revised 0.6% increase in the prior month and missing market forecasts of a 0.8% jump. Albeit slower, considerable order growth was noted for transportation equipment (3.7% vs 9.8% in March), carried by defense aircraft and parts (32.7% vs 26.9%), while demand for machinery rebounded (1.6% vs -0.1%). On the other hand, order levels stalled for fabricated metal products (vs 0.7%) and contracted for primary metals (-0.6% vs 0.5%), computers and electronic products (-1.4% vs 1.8%), and electrical equipment, appliances, and components (-1.7% vs 0.4%), underscoring the impact of higher interest rates. Excluding defense, orders fell by 0.4%. On an annual basis, US manufacturing orders expanded by 1.4%.
