Factory orders in Germany unexpectedly rose by 7% month-over-month in June 2023, easily exceeding market estimates of a 2% fall and accelerating from a downwardly revised 6.2% growth in the prior month. This was the third straight month of rise in industrial orders and the steepest pace since June 2020, amid large-scale orders in several areas. New orders for mechanical engineering jumped 5.1%, and those for other vehicle construction soared 89.2%, mainly linked to the aerospace industry. Conversely, orders for motor vehicles and their parts tumbled 7.3%. Orders for capital goods increased by 9.9%, while those for intermediate and consumer goods were up 2.0% and 7.7%, respectively. Excluding large-scale orders, new orders declined by 2.6%. Meanwhile, foreign orders climbed by 13.5% with demand up from both the Euro Area (27.2%) and third countries (5.0%), while domestic orders dropped by 2%.
