France's current account deficit narrowed to EUR 0.7 billion in May 2023 from a revised EUR 1.7 billion in the previous month, missing market expectations of a EUR 0.6 billion surplus. The goods deficit declined to EUR 7.7 billion from EUR 8.0 billion, while the services surplus increased to EUR 4.5 billion from EUR 4.0 billion and the primary income surplus rose to EUR 6.1 billion from EUR 5.9 billion. Finally, the secondary income gap was unchanged at EUR 3.6 billion.

France Current Account Swings to Deficit
France posted a current account deficit of EUR 0.1 billion in April 2023, shifting from a downwardly revised EUR 0.3 billion surplus in the previous month but beating market expectations of a EUR 0.8 billion gap. The deficit for the goods account widened to EUR 7 billion from EUR 6.2 billion, prompted by the increase in energy bill; while the gap for secondary income was unchanged at EUR 3.5 billion. On the other hand, the services surplus rose to EUR 4.2 billion from EUR 3.7 billion, boosted by the rise in travel services; while the primary income surplus also stood at EUR 6.2 billion. In April 2022, the country registered a current account deficit of EUR 4.4 billion.
