Germany Construction Sector Extends the Decline
The HCOB Germany Construction PMI fell to 41.4 in June of 2023, the lowest reading since February of 2021, signalling a noticeable acceleration in the rate of decline in building activity. Both activity and new orders contracted at a faster pace amid rising interest rates, customer uncertainty and wider inflationary pressures. Also, employment fell for a fifteenth straight month as firms adjusted to lower workloads and the prospect of a prolonged slowdown in demand. Purchasing activity fell the most for over three years and lower demand for building materials and products helped to alleviate the pressure on construction supply chains. Meanwhile, input costs fell the most in 14 years and business expectations were also lower. Housing activity was the worst-performing construction category, with activity falling the most since February 2010.
