The HCOB Germany Construction PMI edged down to 41 in July 2023 from 41.4 in June, and pointing to the sixteenth straight month of falling construction activity and the biggest since February of 2021. The construction sector continued to faced challenges, as rising interest rates, still-high building costs and stagnating economy weighed on both demand and firms' expectations. Housing activity recorded its sharpest decline since February 2010 and work on commercial projects dropped at a faster pace. However, civil engineering activity experienced its slowest contraction in five months. Additionally, employment was reduced for the sixteenth consecutive month, as firms looked to pare back staffing capacity due to the decrease in demand. Input costs fell for the third month to the lowest since May 2009, but remained at historically high levels. source: Markit Economics
